BLEEUWARDEN: Blue Leeuwarden
Our main focuses are Spoordok and Middelzee, two significant areas in Leeuwarden, Friesland, the Netherlands. Spoordok is a former industrial zone with a transportation hub, while Middelzee was once a sea. Our proposal includes flooding both areas to create islands with various purposes such as housing, commercial, farming, and wildlife reserves. The aim is to integrate water into the city and establish infrastructure for low and high-speed boat transportation. We have preserved and expanded the existing canal network, creating separate canals for low and high-speed boats. This could potentially serve as a new form of public transport in the future.

We identified three scenarios for life on the water. To determine the scale and plan usage of the territory, we utilized isochrones, which indicate areas that can be reached within a specific time frame.

With the 15-minute neighborhood concept, our design ensures that most daily needs can be fulfilled within a 15-minute range, whether by walking, biking, or boating.
For commuting, a maximum of 30 minutes is needed to reach work comfortably, eliminating the requirement for a car as walking, biking, or using a low-speed boat are viable options.

The excellent accessibility also allows for car or high-speed boat usage mainly during weekends, making it feasible to reach the sea and other picturesque towns within just one hour. This will enhance tourist appeal not only to Leeuwarden but also to the entire Friesland region.
Spoordok area
We aim to transform Spoordok, currently a barrier in Leeuwarden, into a vibrant new city center that complements the existing historic center of the city. With its railroad tracks in the south, canals in the north, and large quarters, the area is currently inaccessible.
Middelzee area
Middelzee, Leeuwarden's forgotten port city history, was once a prosperous trading hub. Our vision is to revive this water city identity and make it central to the Middelzee development strategy.
Water has always been valuable, as seen in the demand for waterfront housing. We want to extend this privilege to all residents of Middelzee, enhancing their quality of life.
